La Lancha’s ten casitas and suites step down a forested hillside above Lake Petén Itzá, each one its own small clearing in the trees. Every dwelling has a covered deck and a hammock, turned toward the water or the rainforest, where parakeets start the morning and howler monkeys keep time through the day. Inside, much of the furniture and craftwork is Guatemalan, chosen by the Coppola family from local makers.
There are four kinds. The Rainforest Casitas sit deep among the trees; the Lakeview Casitas catch the lake at sunset; the Rainforest Junior Suites stand high above the jungle floor; and the Lakeview Suites, the largest, give the fullest view of the water. Tikal and its Maya temples are forty-five minutes off. The lake shifts from blue to green as the light moves, and a day here tends to organize itself around watching it.
